What is a Hackspace?

A hackerspace or hackspace (also referred to as a hacklab, makerspace or creative space) is a location where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, engineering, science, digital or electronic art (but also in many other realms) can meet, socialise and/or collaborate. Hackerspaces can be viewed as open community labs incorporating elements of machine shops, workshops and/or studios where hackers can come together to share resources and knowledge to build and make things.

Most people don't have the ability to mig weld at home, but at a hackerspace they can have access to a workshop, welding equipment and someone to help them. An electronics engineer could troubleshoot a complex circuit with a high-end oscilloscope, whist an inventor can be prototyping a new creation on a 3D Printer. All these items cost hundreds of pounds, but with pooled resources and membership fees all this equipment becomes affordable. Don't worry if you have no experience there'll be plenty of training workshops and experienced hands, the only prerequisite is a willingness to learn, share and tinker.

Projects by other Hackerspaces & members of SH Hackerspace

  • Thames Valley RepRap Group - Self build 3D printers, several SH Hackspace members are involved with TRRUG, so expect to see 3D printers and the opportunity to build one.
